What a tragedy it would be for my skin to look healthy and glow like this, and I gate keep the step-by-step process you can follow to glow as well. This post elaborates a simple 5-step skincare routine you can follow for the daytime, that will preserve the health of your skin and potentially enhance its look . All products mentioned are either Kenyan-made or easily found in Kenya, great quality and are effective. At the end of this post, you will find a list of all the products mentioned, where you can find them and their prices.
Before I share the steps, you will need a cleanser, toner, moisturizer and sunscreen. If you are in the search of products you could use, I have suggested the products I use, that you could as well, that may work phenomenally for you.
Now, let’s get into the steps;
Step 1: Wet your face with lukewarm water and massage the cleanser all over your face for 30-60 seconds.
Lukewarm water is the perfect water temperature to clean your skin with because it softens the skin which allows the product to penetrate the pores and cleanse better. It also ensures your cleanser lathers easily, so you end up using less.
I use the Nimo Naturals Turmeric and Liwa Soap Bar. It effectively cleanses my skin without stripping it dry.
Cleansing for 30-60 seconds is the adequate time that allows your cleanser to clean your skin effectively.
Proper cleansing removes dirt, bacteria and excess skin care product, which unclogs your pores, which then prevents breakouts.
Step 2: Rinse off with lukewarm water and pat dry with a clean towel or paper towel. You can also leave your skin to air dry if you have the time.
After the cleanse, rinse off with lukewarm water and PAT DRY with a CLEAN towel or paper towel.
Patting dry is the better option as opposed to rubbing dry. When you pat, you are gentle on your skin, which preserves its elasticity and delays signs of aging.
I also insist on using a clean towel/paper towel because why would you want to put back dirt on an already cleansed face?
Step 3: Apply toner
A toner is not a mandatory step in your skincare routine, but it can help to enhance the look of your skin. Especially by adding back the moisture that may have been stripped during cleansing, leaving your skin looking soft and supple.
For this step, put some toner in your hands apply it to your face, and let it sit as it is absorbed in your skin.
I use plain Rose water from Alison’s as my toner.
Step 4: Apply moisturizer
Next, it’s time to put on the moisturizer. A moisturizer does just what it’s called, moisturizing your skin. This helps to protect your skin barrier from the sometimes harsh environment, and gives your skin that healthy glow.
My Hyaluronic Acid Cream moisturizer from Nimo Naturals is lightweight yet moisturizing, easily glides into the skin, non-greasy and has no scent.
Step 5: Top it off with sunscreen
Whether or not the sun is out, whether or not you’ll be stepping out of the house, sunscreen is a must. I know it’s been cold and gloomy in Nairobi for months, but that does not mean that you stop using sunscreen.
Sunscreen protects your skin from the sun’s UV rays that usually cause dryness, speed up aging, sunburn, and even in severe cases, skin cancer.
For this, apply 2-3 fingers long all over your face and neck. If you’ll be out and about, more so if the sun will be scorching, carry it along and reapply at least every two hours.
I have been using the Nivea Shine Control Spf 50 sunscreen for years now, and it’s always worked amazingly for me. It is light-weight, non-greasy and absorbs into the skin without leaving a white cast!
Sunscreen, I would say, is the most important part of your routine. It protects your skin, thus all the steps you’ve followed prior to this count, and the products you’ve used get to work effectively.
And that is it. That is the simple 5-step daytime skincare routine for healthy skin, using (mostly) Kenyan products.
When it comes to skincare, playing the long game is your best bet to meet your desired skincare goals. Starting with the basics, such as having a simple skincare routine like this, is an important aspect to have set in stone as you are on your way to achieving your skincare goals. More so, I can’t miss celebrating and shouting out the Kenyan skincare brands, especially Nimo Naturals for creating such great quality, affordable, and locally available skincare products that work!
