As we continue to explore the incredible paradise that is Diani, let me tell you about a fun activity you can do while there. How does taking a dip in the ocean for a swim, or watching the sunset by the Kongo River sound? Sounds good to me! That’s what today’s blog post is all about.
During our stay at Diani, on one of the warm afternoons, we decided to head to the beach for a swim and to watch the sunset. Before I delve into the details of how these experiences were, how about I share some fun facts about Diani and the Kongo River?
Did You know that;
- Diani is in the South Coast. It is located 30km south of Mombasa, Kwale County.
- Diani is accessed via the Likoni Ferry from Mombasa. If using the ferry isn’t your thing, you are in luck. After the completion of the Dongo Kundu Bypass Highway, the town can be accessed by road.
- According to Cabin Zero, Diani Beach has been ranked #5 on the list of the best white sand beaches in the world. This is due to the soft, white, and powdery sand that stretches for over 20km along the Indian Ocean coastline, as well as the turquoise, clear waters.
- The Kongo River originates from Shimba Hills and meets the Indian Ocean via an estuary in Diani. Btw, if your memory of social studies is vague, an estuary is the area where a river and ocean meet.
- The Kongo River is named after a Muslim named Swaddiq Kongo, who was buried at the Kongo Mosque.
Swimming in the Ocean
This activity is as simple as it sounds. We changed into our swimsuits and completely immersed ourselves in the salty and wavy waters. It was super fun as every time a wave came, we tried to stay afloat while shouting, ‘Anguka Nayo!’ The ones who know, they know. 😉
Caution;
- Ensure you do this activity when the sea is not as rough. The power of the waves should not be underestimated, even though you may be an expert swimmer.
- If you don’t enjoy the burn of salty water in your eyes or the back of your throat, then this activity may not be for you. Small price to pay for fun though if you ask me!
Sunsets By the Kongo River
If your kinda activity is to simply lay a shuka on the beach, and sit watching the beautiful sunset, then this one by the Kongo River will be to die for.
I don’t think my words do much justice to express the beauty of this sunset, so I’ll let these pictures do the talking.
If you’re thinking of taking a trip to Diani, you can include both of these activities on your list. I am sure you will have a blast!
Next post, I’ll tell you about one of the best experiences we had while in Diani. I also consider it as one of my 2024 highlights.
Till next time,
Xoxo,
Miss Kambe.
