The #1 Reason Why You Fear Being Seen

I was mulling over my thoughts the other day, as per usual and I remembered the season about 4 years ago when I felt a prompting from the Lord to start my blog and be more visible on the socials.

‘I’m not a social-mediary person.’

‘It’s cringe 😬.’

‘My life is not aesthetic enough. ‘

These are a handful of the excuses I made, that held me back from showing up online.

However, the excuses were a mask of something deeper.

I didn’t want to show up because I had fear.

What fear?

Fear of being misunderstood.

In the past, I usually felt misunderstood because I didn’t know who I truly was, and also felt like others didn’t.

So, I was always defensive and protective over myself and constantly wanted to control what people thought about me and their opinions. So I’d prefer to stay silent and in the background. If they don’t hear from me or see me, they won’t misunderstand me, and I won’t have to defend myself.

With social media, I cannot control what someone thinks about what I say, how I look, or how my message comes across.

And relinquishing that control seemed like an arduous task because I had to be ok with being misunderstood.

Perhaps your fear of being misunderstood has stopped you from showing up in spaces where you could truly shine.

Allow me to encourage you.

It is NOT YOUR JOB to control how people perceive you or use your energy to correct people’s perceptions of who you are when they misunderstand you.

Your job is to nurture a positive self-perception, heal from past labels, and truly discover who you are and own it!

I find that having a close relationship with God is one of the things that make a difference for me. He’s my creator and knew me even before I was formed in my mother’s womb. The more I know Him, the more I see me the way He sees me. And I think the way He sees me is the truth of who I am.

To live a life of freedom is to live and let others misunderstand you.

The story they’ve told themselves about you in their head is based on their perception, experiences, and beliefs. And what they think is simply a projection of those aspects.

It’s not your job to try and ‘correct’ or control that. That’s way too exhausting.

You know who you are. So just Be.
